New underpinnings for old lady of the Thames
Article Abstract:
Structural engineers are preparing an impressive Thames-side building in London, England, for a new function. Somerset House has housed UK archives for more than 200 years, but from 2000 it will house a public art gallery of international standing. The building has always had structural problems, particularly in the two-storey, vaulted building which is in front of the main building. Nineteenth-century engineers installed ties across the arches of this building to restrict movement, but engineers on the current project are inserting a reinforced concrete staple under the building's roof terrace.

The undersea world of block concrete
Article Abstract:
Fishing communities in Scotland are considering the possibility of constructing large reefs made from a specially-developed concrete product. The main aim of a man-made reef is to manage fish stock by preventing the use of towed fishing gear. However, a well-designed reef will also increase fish numbers through its provision of a safe habitat. The type of concrete used in the construction industry would be too expensive for use in a large reef, but the Scottish authorities hope to pilot the use of concrete made from dust produced during granite aggregate manufacture.
