No ban on Tiger-talk
Article Abstract:
The Indian ban on the separatist group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) who occupy the Tamil Nadu state of India and are seeking a minority Tamil state in Sri Lanka's northern and eastern provinces was met with mixed reactions in Sri Lanka. However, Pres Premadasa negated a similar ban since it would deny any hope of peaceful negotiations between Tamil separatists and the Sri Lankan government. Sri Lankan officials are counting on the separatists' interest for peaceful negotiations as this may put to rest a long-running dispute.

Cornered in Colombo
Article Abstract:
President Chandrika Kumaratunga of Sri Lanka courageously insisted on pursuing a political solution to the struggle with the separatist Tamil Tigers after they set off a devastating blast in Colombo on Jan 31. However, she is constrained by growing political pressure for a military resolution, and by the need for opposition support for increased autonomy for the Tamil population. The idea is to encourage the Tamils to reject the Tigers, a step the bombing may aid, but public anger at all Tamils could also result.
