Trouble on the horizon: think-tank to revamp maritime strategy
Article Abstract:
Malaysia's government founded the Malaysian Institute of Maritime Affairs (MIMA) in Jul 1993 to examine national, regional and international maritime questions. In particular, MIMA is concerned with Malaysia's sea-boundaries and its claim to portions of the South China Sea as its exclusive economic zone. Seven nations dispute Malaysia's claims: Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Brunei, the Philippines and China. MIMA director B.A. Hamzah believes that maritime issues are crucial for Malaysia's future and fears that China's territorial ambitions may endanger regional security.

Clash of styles: high diplomacy upsets neighbors
Article Abstract:
Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has assumed a dominant role in Southeast Asian politics and diplomacy. His aggressive style is not well liked in the region particularly in Indonesia where Pres Suharto rules the country silently but effectively. Mahathir is seen as ambitious and having an eye for regional leadership. His anti-West rhetoric but nevertheless pro-Western policies contrast with those of his neighbors who are more reticent about criticizing the West.

Severance pays
Article Abstract:
Malaysia's decision to cut off diplomatic relations with Serbia has been criticized by international observers as hasty in the light of the forthcoming meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement in Indonesia in Sep 1992 of which Malaysia is a prominent member. Malaysia's move has been directly attributed to Prime Minister Mohamad Mahathir's decision to please the Muslim majority in his country who openly sympathize with the Muslims in Bosnia.
