Deaths from severe acute respiratory syndrome have increased, and some people fear that Hong Kong will abandon its exchange rate regime because of economic damage from the disease. However, Tung Chee-Hwa, Hong Kong's chief executive, has promised to retain the currency board of Hong Kong.
