No surrender in the skies
Article Abstract:
European Community (EC) Commissioner Peter D. Sutherland says that the failed Jun 1987 Brussels agreement on rules governing the European airline industry was only marginally acceptable. Sutherland wants to see an end to what he sees as Europe's uniquely anti-competitive system. Proceedings instituted against 10 of 12 European airlines have been reactivated, and Sutherland says they will be pursued with renewed vigor. The accusation is that the airlines are operating an illegal cartel in violation of the Treaty of Rome. Sutherland says that US deregulation has had considerable beneficial results, but that Europe is not as integrated as the US. Sutherland adds that the EC wants to ensure market access to new entrants.

Why Memorex dared to tackle Telex
Article Abstract:
Memorex International's Dec 1987 purchase of competitor Telex effectively doubled the corporation's size, and required borrowing $950 million. It is expected that a 'European' management style will be used to smooth the merger, including continuation of Memorex's use of a dispersed decision-making process. Total debt of the resulting firm Memorex Telex will come to nearly $1.5 billion, a tough burden at a time when international financial markets are in disarray and when some economists expect a recession. Strong competition in the computer industry leads some industry analysts to predict intensifying competition for firms such as Memorex Telex.

Marathon man
Article Abstract:
Memorex Telex executive Giorgio Ronchi expects to log up to 280 days of travel in 1988 in overseeing his company's operations in 27 countries. This amount of business travel can be very stressful and requires meticulous planning. Ronchi is highly organized; he never checks baggage, eats lightly, and often utilizes airport business centers. Ronchi relies on a sophisticated secretarial staff as well as his family for ongoing support. Experts question the wisdom of this amount of business travel, but Ronchi displays remarkable stamina, claims never to suffer from burnout, and thrives on the continual social contact.
