No truck with trains: China's joint ventures take to the highway
Article Abstract:
Businesses in China increasingly ship goods by truck rather than rail despite higher direct costs, citing a host of problems with the railways. Many trains delay departure for days waiting for all cars to be full, capacity is scarce as the govt allocates 85% to grain and coal, space must be reserved weeks in advance, and goods sent by train are often lost or damaged. Truck shipments are more reliable and result in less damage, and can be arranged only a day in advance. Highway construction is rising, too.
