Nokia posts 85% surge in pretax profit for quarter, beating analysts' estimates

Nokia Corp., a manufacturer of telecommunications equipment, has reported pretax income of $822.1 million or 4.1 billion markkaa for the third quarter that ended Sept. 30, 1998, up 85% compared to the figures it reported in 1997 for the same quarter. The strong results exceeded estimates of analysts who expected Nokia to post pretax profits of between 3.1 billion markkaa and 3.6 billion markkaa for the quarter. Nokia credited its performance to strong demand for its mobile phones, whose sales for the quarter increased by 94% to 12.9 billion markkaa compared to sales in 1997 for the same period.
