Vodafone reports addition of 6.6 million customers

Vodafone AirTouch PLC stated that its global customer base grew to over 59 million customers during the second quarter of 2000. Vodafone said it had more than 6.6 million new customers in 25 countries for the second quarter of 2000, and that its biggest region is the European region, which had over 4.38 million new customers and a customer base at the end of June of more than 32.28 million.

Nokia Corp. has introduced a handset with Internet surfing capabilities using wi-fi, or short-range wireless technology. The Nokia 9500 Communicator is able to bypass conventional cellular telephone networks. Implications for market share held by Vodafone Group PLC and DoCoMo Europe S.A. are discussed.
