Non-aligned and useful: Rabin meets Suharto in surprise stopover
Article Abstract:
A surprise meeting between Indonesian Pres Suharto and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin occurred in Jakarta, Indonesia on Oct 15, 1993. The meeting startled many observers because Indonesia, a Muslim country, does not recognize Israel. However, Suharto met Rabin not as president of Indonesia but as chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement. Rabin asked for the three-hour meeting during a five-day visit to China. Suharto probably acceded to Rabin's request in hopes of enhancing non-aligned participation in Middle East peace negotiations.

Succession talk recedes: Suharto could lead into the 21st century
Article Abstract:
Indonesian President Suharto seems ready to run for his seventh five-year term despite his wife's wishes and in the face of some military unhappiness with his family's influence. Suharto has not lost his political edge, but the problems starting to face him could grow larger than even he can manage alone. He has succeeded in leading the country toward prosperity while limiting unrest, and political change may come slowly. The military seems certain to retain political power, perhaps unlike Suharto's family.
