Nora, Maria and the American dream
Article Abstract:
Immigration from Mexico to the US is likely to persist while Mexico is poorer with a higher birth rate. Intervention is not always successful, as happened with multiculturalism, yet doing nothing may also be a mistake. Education is a key issue which cannot be ignored. Immigrants offer opportunities and are keen to be Americans. Their drive should not be squandered, and this is true for poorer families, as well as for the affluent groups such as Silicon Valley Indian programmers and the Los Angeles Latino middle class.

Let me in
Article Abstract:
A major wave of immigration into the US began in 1980. Most immigrants are family members, which has benefited Asians and Latinos, those who are granted green cards, for which there are delays, and refugees. There is also an annual lottery of green cards, with limits per country, and Ireland is one of the most favored countries. There are also illegal immigrants, with the total estimated at 5 million for 1996, and some 300,000 illegal immigrants are though to enter the US every year.

The next America
Article Abstract:
Immigrants and changing the geography of the US, with closer links being developed with Latin America, and faster growth in states where immigration is important. Immigrant businesses have been set up such as Asian supermarkets and Spanish speaking TV stations. Immigrants often see mainstream business as ignoring or patronising them. Newcomers are young, and are likely to be increasingly important in setting trends, especially because of their large numbers.
