Nordic gas grid could become viable with 10 years, study says
Article Abstract:
A gas transmission system connecting the networks of Denmark, Sweden and Finland with the gas fields in Russia and Norway by 2008 is economically viable, according to a study undertaken by Neste Oy of Finland and commissioned by seven Nordic energy companies. The feasibility study concluded that a single, large-diameter pipeline would be sufficient to supply the gas requirements of Finland, Sweden and Denmark as well as serve as a transit capacity to the Baltic countries and Western Europe. Neste Oy's study presented two grid-development options, one that initially uses the Norwegian gas supplies to the Stockholm, Sweden, areas and the other that is based on Russian gas imports to the area.

Some Caspian wells unexpectedly run dry
Article Abstract:
Oil reserves in and around the Caspian Sea, formerly part of the Soviet Union region, is being reassessed by industry analysts as an unprofitable area despite reports that the area has potential oil reserves of 178 billion barrels. Reportedly, there are more drilling with futile finds than successful oil drill explorations within the six years after the area was opened to the market. Marginal returns are depressed due to insufficient availability of facilities for drilling and transporting oil and gas. A significant number of oil executives, however, remain hopeful that the area could be the next Saudi Arabia despite discouragement from the observers' view.
