Normalising India
Article Abstract:
India accounts for 0.7% of world trade and attracts a tenth of the amount of foreign direct investment attracted by China. There is much at stake in India's general election of Sep 1999, such as an end to political instability. India suffers from a 40% illiteracy rate, high poverty levels, problems with infrastructure, parasitic public servants, loss-making companies benefiting from public money, and lack of equal access to education for many girls. There is agreement on less state control, and there have been some political improvements, but there is still progress to be made.

Happy anniversary?
Article Abstract:
India was created on Aug 15, 1947, when Great Britain gave it independence. The results of efforts to build the country led to a democratic political history and the elimination of mass starvation, but it has suffered economically as the population has grown and the economy was not emphasized.
