North America: Danisco set to capture market share
Article Abstract:
The US market for flavourings and ingredients is heading for a consolidation and Danisco Ingredients is set to strengthen its position in the country, says Tjerk de Ruiter, Danisco Ingredients' head of the US operations. The US market for ingredients grows at the rate of 3-4% a year. Danisco's total turnover in the US today is around DKr2bn (US$240mn) and the bread, ice cream and margarine sectors are the company's main target areas. According to de Ruiter, the company is making efforts to expand operations by focusing on new , fast -growing market segments such as the dairy and drinks sectors. The latest acquisition in the US was the purchase of Florida Flavors, that is one among the three leading flavouring companies for fruit flavours to the juice industry. Quest and Degussa are the two main rivals to Danisco in the US with a broad range of products. Competition with the Danish companies Chr. Hansen and Novozymes is limited in the US, according to de Ruiter.

DENMARK: POSSIBLE ACQUISITION OF CHR HANSEN
Article Abstract:
The Danish company Chr Hansen will possibly be split into one food ingredient company and one allergy vaccine company, as there are no synergies between the two sectors, according to an analyst. This conclusion might be a reason behind the Danish Lundbeck Fund's acquisition of further shares in the company. The Fund now owns 25% of share capital and have nearly 60% of votes in Chr Hansen. Earlier this year, the Lundbeck Fund sold a 20% stake in the Danish pharmaceutical company Lundbeck, which means the Fund has financial strenght to make acquisitions.

In the US, Bang & Olufsen (B&O), the Danish producer of audio and video equipment, is opening several new stores every week this autumn. By now, there are 30 B&O stores in the US. The launch of the cordless telephone system Beocom 6,000 is an important part of the expansion on the American market; it accounts for up to 20-25% of turnover of individual stores, and this is considered remarkable by the B&O group.
