Northwest lays off staff amid strike

Northwest Airlines started laying off employees amidst a labor strike by its 6,000 pilots. The initial layoffs, which began on September 1, 1998, involved approximately 175 flight dispatchers and meteorologists. Northwest expects to implement further layoffs during the first week of September 1998. The airline has over 50,000 workers. Laid off workers will lose their health benefits at the end of September.
