Scientists hope to learn more about genetic mapping and genetic diseases by studying other mammals. Mammals often have more chromosomes than humans, but scientists can search for recurring gene sequences matching human genes. Mice have been especially useful in cancer research.

The Human Genome Project has advanced the understanding of how genetics affects human behavior. However, some people have misinterpreted some of the preliminary research from the project to construe 'biology is destiny,' ignoring the very real importance of free will.
