Nothing like the sun: Pasona's chief isn't your typical Japanese CEO
Article Abstract:
CEO Yasuyuki Nambu, of Pasona Inc, is an unusual Japanese executive because he runs his business based on the principles taught him by a Buddhist school that social values are more important than profits. He runs a temporary employment company in a country that was built on the concept of lifetime employment and whether his company is profitable or not is unknown. Nambu hopes to have a social impact both in Japan and globally. Currently he is working at finding positions for workers left unemployed by the Kobe earthquake on Jan 17, 1995.

The answer's in the mail: Japanese parcel firm challenges post office
Article Abstract:
Yamato Transport is challenging the monopoly Japan's Post Office has over registered mail and a variety of related services. Already the company dominates the country's parcel delivery, with 44.3% of the market compared to the Post Office's 24%. Recently it began delivering credit cards, and it may launch a court challenge to the Post Office's classification of those as registered mail. The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications wants to avoid a lawsuit because that might cost it a number of monopolies.

Comic relief: Japanese comedienne battles prejudice with humour
Article Abstract:
Tamayo Otsuki has become by far the most successful and perhaps the only Japanese comedienne in the US. A former tour guide, would-be singer, and topless dancer, she debuted as a comic in 1984 to great success. She enjoys confronting stereotypes in her humor, much as black comedians have done. Born in 1959, she now feels she has mastered the US comedy scene and wants to move on to India, after spending 1995 in Amsterdam and Shanghai.
