Now, rule
Article Abstract:
Kim Dae Jung will become South Korean President at a time of great uncertainty for the country. He has agreed to implement the International Monetary Fund's $57 billion rescue package, and has acknowledged that South Korea will have to go through a difficult period before it recovers. He is already going ahead with his legislative agenda, although he does not formally take over from President Kim Young Sam until Feb 25, 1998. Some observers are rather cautious about his economic policies, pointing out that he owes favours to political allies.

Frayed friendship
Article Abstract:
South Korean concern Daewoo Electronics has reacted with considerable anger to the decision by the French government to block its planned purchase of Thomson Multimedia. The decision has had a very negative impact on Korean national pride, and may sour relations between France and South Korea for some time to come. Daewoo may still consider submitting a new bid for Thomson Multimedia if the French government decides to reopen the selection process.
