Obasanjo on his own
Article Abstract:
Nigeria has been hit by political and religious violence which has led to the deaths of over 1,000 people in a year, and there are fears that the country could break up. There are divisions between Muslims and Christians and disagreements over plans to introduce Islamic law in parts of the north. President Olusegun Obasanjo has poor relations with the parliament, taking on more roles himself, and many projects are delayed, awaiting for him to approve them.

Nigeria's long road back to democracy
Article Abstract:
Local elections have been held in Nigeria as part of a move back toward democracy and an elected civilian government for the first time in 15 years. The Dec 1998 local elections have been well conducted, and state elections are scheduled for Jan 1999. There has been a public perception that the head of government, General Abdulsalami Abubakar genuinely wants the army to withdraw from politics and an elected government to rule.
