Obstacles to reforming the UN: interests of developed and developing countries clash
Article Abstract:
Reform of the United Nations Security Council is long overdue but apparently will not happen soon due to fierce disagreements over the nature of changes. The UN's 50th anniversary will probably pass in Sept 1995 with the body still deadlocked over how much to expand the Security Council, whether to require two permanent members to vote together to create a veto, and how new permanent members should be selected. The current council is heavily European and dominated by developed nations.

Is UN declaration universal?
Article Abstract:
US secretary of state Madeleine Albright's attendance at Asean meetings in late July emphasized the fact that the US world view is different from many Asian countries. Asian speakers criticised the US for its condemnation of any attempts to impugn or renegotiate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Asia believes that the West should not make decisions and expect them to be accepted without question purely on the basis of international norms.
