King Bhumipol Adulyadej has appointed Anand Panyarachun to be Thailand's prime minister following the resignation of Suchinda Kraprayoon.Anand was prime minister before, and has a reputation for clean, efficient government. His reign is expected to last only until new elections can be organized.

Thailand, the generals and the king

Article Abstract:

Thailand's government is in an uproar following the massacre of pro-democracy demonstrators in Bangkok on May 18th. Prime minister Suchinda Kraprayoon is clearly finished. It remains to be seen how much influence the military will be able to maintain in the coming months.
