Insurance stocks are outperforming other securities for the first time in years, but the industry may or may not be experiencing an upturn. The markets are examined in Britain, continental Europe and the US, where insurance companies were hard hit by Hurricane Andrew.

The prolonged stock market downturn in Japan has hit the insurance industry even harder than the nation's banks. Insurance firms' unrealized gains fell by 61% in the fiscal year ending Mar 31, 1992, while banks unrealized gains during the period declined 53%.
