Okinawa memory: Japan
Article Abstract:
A law passed the Japanese parliament allowing the use of Japanese armed forces in United Nations military actions. Japanese soldiers last fought outside of Japan on the island of Okinawa during World War II. Many Okinawans died during battles with Americans. The Okinawan economy has only recently begun recovery.

Japan is on the verge of passing a bill that will allow its soldiers to become part of United Nations' peacekeeping efforts abroad. Since World War II the Japanese constitution has forbidden the use of its troops on foreign soil, but many feel the time has come to change that, especially since the Gulf War.

Japanese prime minister Kiichi Miyazawa hopes to get a bill through the Diet that would allow Japanese troops to participate in United Nations peacekeeping efforts abroad. Miyazawa has a definite political stake in the bill and hopes to make it law before the Jul 1992 election.
