No time to worry; in Malaysia's five-year plan, little fear of overheating
Article Abstract:
Malaysia outlined its economic policy goals in the country's Seventh Five-Year Plan which describes that agenda it plans to follow. The plan calls for a 28% increase in public spending compared to the previous period and seems to ignore warnings by economists for slower growth in order to avoid an overheating economy. The new plan includes a theme of shifting to large-scale production as part of a strategy to become a larger player in global markets.

Article Abstract:
Political analysts believe that Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad is extremely determined to see his reform program through to the very end, even though he is now 71. He has been prime minister for 16 years, and shows no signs of stepping down. Under his 'Vision 2020' program, he aims for Malaysia to become a fully developed country, but there are mixed views among economists about whether this can be achieved.
