Change and continuity: Mahathir opts for status quo in new cabinet
Article Abstract:
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad introduced little overall change in the appointments he made on May 3, 1995, following his party's landslide victory in the Apr 25 polls. He gave Defense Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak the education portfolio, Datuk Hamid Albar got defense, and Datuk Mustapa Mohamad the Ministry of Entrepreneurial Development. Those and other appointments stirred speculation over possible preparations for the next set of elections, by indicating who might be in favor or liable to receive active support.

The doctor knows best; Mahathir to decide on Sabah chief minister
Article Abstract:
Malaysia's ruling National Front coalition faces a deadline in Sabah state, where Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad promised in 1994 to rotate the chief minister position among the three main ethnic communities. The state branch of the United Malays National Organization wants to repudiate that promise but it and the Chinese and Kadazan parties have agreed to leave the decision to Mahathir, who heads Umno on the national level. Mahathir may face a rebuke in Oct when Umno party polls are held to select 36 office-holders.

Back off: kedah gives Mahathir a political rebuff
Article Abstract:
Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad suffered a clear setback on March 24, 1996, when 22 of the 25 assemblymen in the ruling Umno party from Kedah state announced they oppose replacing the state's chief minister, Osman Aroff, with Sanusi Junid. This was the first open defiance of Mahathir from within Umno since 1987 and follows a string of other troubles, possibly signaling tumultuous party elections in October. Sanusi, a firm supporter of Mahathir, is a rival of Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
