American airlines troubles are not because of deregulation despite the fact that troubles began after regulations were lifted. Most American airlines are in deep financial trouble and must learn to deal with the freedom deregulation gives them.

If airlines are to survive they must find ways to keep prices low, cut costs, yet buy state of the art aircraft that save on fuel and repair costs. One solution would be for aircraft manufacturers to offer subsidies and financing programs.

Japan Airlines has forecast it will have lost $400 million in the fiscal year ending Mar 31, 1993. The airline suffers from high costs which it has not controlled, and very stiff competition on its international routes.
