A few hundred students staged anti-government sit-ins in Yangon, Myanmar, on Oct 21-22, 1996, and the small protest could be the beginning of a broad movement to oust the country's military junta. The junta brutally suppressed the pro-democracy students and Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD).
