On the competitive effects of price-matching policies
Article Abstract:
Price-matching and price-beating policies, which are generally viewed as anti-consumer since they are said to lead to supracompetitive prices, may in fact lead to fluctuations in equilibrium prices. The rise or fall of equilibrium prices due to price-matching or price-beating policies may be affected by the strategies of firms and the market's reaction to pricing strategies. Changes in conventional wisdom about price-matching and price-beating may lead to changes in the negative views presented in legal literature regarding the price.
