Thailand's East and Southeast Asian neighbors would be wise to learn from Thailand's economic problems of 1996 and 1997. Thailand waited too long to initiate reforms such as the restoration of budgetary control and restructuring of the outdated and corrupt financial system.

Thailand has made little progress against poverty despite having one of the world's fastest growing economies since the late 1980's. The country's lack of a good education system is partially to blame, as very few Thais get past elementary school.
