Russia's economic quagmire
Article Abstract:
Russia faces a number of economic problems such as drops in real wages and foreign trade, though the economic crisis following devaluation has not been as bad as expected. Foreign exchange markets are hampered by restrictions, and a dual exchange rate has emerged. There has been little reform of tax, banking and bankruptcy law, which tends to deter foreign investors. Corruption is a serious problem and it is unlikely that a new leadership would have the strength to tackle it.

Getting richer, getting poorer
Article Abstract:
Economic reform in Russia has widened the gap between rich and poor, which the conservative Parliament claims is the only result so far. While the average standard of living has declined, the common people seem committed to a market economy.
