One way to get rich in Soweto
Article Abstract:
Kwaito music is a South African development which may initially appear similar to gangsta rap from the US, with macho posturing and shouted lyrics, yet local rhythms are also used, as are local languages. Kwaito music also reflects the higher level of violence in South Africa, so a greater reluctance to glorify it. Race has become less of an issue with a government that black musicians feel backs them. Kwaito is aspirational music, and one musician even exhorts children to do their schoolwork.
