Happiness is a warm vote
Article Abstract:
There are a number of factors which affect happiness, and one of the most important is being employed rather than unemployed, though retired people tend to be happier than people who are economicaly active. Other factors include being married, not having children, being a woman, white, well-educated and self employed, as opposed to being single, having children, being a man, black, uneducated and an employee. Research in Switzerland has also found that democracy makes people happier, and more so if they are able to take part rather than benefiting as bystanders.

Democratic symmetry
Article Abstract:
Electoral results can be affected by voting procedures, and a mathematician from illinois' Northwestern University, Donald Saari, has examined the symmetry of voting. Systems can give rise to paradoxes when they do not take into account natural cancellations of votes. Paradoxes for elections with three candidates can be characterized for all voting procedures. He sees the Borda count as the fairest system of voting. This is a system developed in 1770 by Jean-Charles de Borda.
