Article Abstract:
Mobilkom, the mobile phone subsidiary of Post & Telekom Austria (PTA), aims to raise the share of mobile phone subscribers using data communication services to 25% within two years from 2% at present. While currently maximum transmission speed is 9,600 bps, the high-speed circuit switched data (HSCSD) technology will allow three times the rate. Around the year 2002 the general packed radio service (GPRS) will allow 115,200 bps. Internet access via Mobilkom costs the PTA on-line fee plus an internet fee that starts from Sch 1.06 per minute. The rates for the company's the A1 PocketNet range between Sch 1.95 and Sch 3.25 per minute.

AUSTRALIA: AUSTRIAN OMV IN GAS EXPLOITATION PROJECT

A 60:40 joint venture of Austrian mineral oil and gas group OMV and Japanese Diamond Gas Resources will start producing natural gas off the Australian coast in September 2001. The partners are planning to invest about AUD 100mn and produce 0.5bn cubic metres of gas annually. OMV obtained the 1.6bn cu.m gas field off the state of Victoria when it took over Cultus Petroleum in 1999.
