Open skies need a takeoff
Article Abstract:
A trend towards liberalization, in the form of privatization, is being experienced by Asian airlines. However, essential elements of the industry are still closely controlled by governmental management. This is caused by the presence of obstacles outside and within Asia. In the competition for market share, Asian carriers have manifested theircapability for adapting the necessary changes. It is expected that people will continue to patronize Asian airlines as they are able to put the premium of consumer satisfaction over government determination.

From chaos to capitalism: a year to celebrate the 'Asianization' of Asia
Article Abstract:
Asia's economic growth slowed in 1995 but the region passed several roadmarks, and its political and social development accelerated. Asian countries became one anothers' top trade partners while small, efficient governments in Singapore and Hong Kong garnered world praise and bloated ones in Japan and South Korea faced a comeuppance. China seems headed for continued solid growth, though its activities still perturb many neighbors. Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, India, and Taiwan are also discussed.
