Article Abstract:
The secret police of East Germany, the Stasi, taped conversations indicating that Helmut Kohl, former German chancellor, was aware of some aspects of a campaign funds scandal to a greater extent than he has admitted. The Stasi maintains a large number of files on Germans, and some have been destroyed. There is a debate on the extent to which the remainder should be used. Many east Germans lost employment as a result of the files, and they argue that there should not be double standards, with westerners exempt.
