Opening markets
Article Abstract:
Yoshito Denawa is developing an idea which may have a significant effect on the Japanese economy. Experts agree that Japan needs to encourage small industries, but banks have been unwilling to extend capital without strong collateral. Denawa has launched D-Brain Securities which will fund the launch, in Sep 1997, of the Venture Investment Mart. This body will vet unlisted growth companies, list the most promising ones, and investors will pay a fee to receive these lists over the Internet. Denawa hope investors will also be interested in more personal involvement with the companies.

Edifice complex
Article Abstract:
The construction of the huge, modern railway station in Japan's ancient capital of Kyoto is symbolic of a process which is happening throughout Japan. Many architects and planners feel that the vast concrete and glass edifice could belong in any modern city, and that the Kyoto planners have paid no respect to the special cultural setting of Kyota. Traditional buildings are also disappearing in other parts of the city and throughout Japan. The Japanese are increasingly attracted towards modern ways and artefacts, and away from uniquely Japanese traditions.

Beginning of the end
Article Abstract:
Sanyo Securities was declared bankrupt with debts of 838 billion yen on 3 Nov 1997. Sanyo's creditor banks and other industry leaders refused to lend more money despite pleas from the Ministry of Finance, making Sanyo the first listed securities company to collapse in this way. Other securities companies and banks are in financial difficulties and they may follow Sanyo into bankruptcy. It is clear that the government is no longer able to avert these crises by encouraging stronger competitors to support weaker ones.
