Linux is an operating system developed by Linus Torvalds who works for Transmeta, a company designing chips. Linux has become an open source which is improved by volunteers, whose best efforts are used. There could be as many as 6 million users, and the number is growing. Linux is seen as dependable, and is highly rated by users. Oracle is to offer some of its software in Linux versions. Linux has some limitations, but increased support from major companies means that it will be more widely used.

Lernout and Hauspie (L and H) is developing speech technology, and Microsoft has acquired a stake of 8% in the company. Microsoft is unlikely to launch a Windows operating system with a user interface based on language prior to 2002. L and H should benefit from license income if Microsoft uses its technology. Burglar alarms, video recorders, cookers and other home appliances can be developed with voice recognition systems, as well as computers.
