Optimal disclosure delay in multistage R&D competition
Article Abstract:
A study on the effects of a policy of disclosure with delay of discovery and incentives to invest in a patent race was conducted. Four equilibrium configurations were derived. Results show that a policy of disclosure with delay lessens the expected time of discovery of new products in multi-stage R&D races. A trailing firm never leaves the patent race as the results of intermediate stages become public knowledge. Competition is most intense during the time of discovery of the intermediate step and the final stage.

Persuasive advertising in Hotelling's model of product differentiation
Article Abstract:
The effect of persuasive advertising in Hotelling's model of product differentiation where consumers have different tastes for two competing products was analyzed. Persuasive advertising is used by companies in their attempts to shift the distribution of the taste of consumers towards one of the products. Monopolists profit more when the distribution is focused on only one of the products. Thus, a firm profits from advertising only when the original distribution of consumer tastes is not biased.

Optimal asymmetric strategies in research joint ventures
Article Abstract:
The joint-profit maximizing solution in the d'Aspremont-Jacquemin model is not symmetric for a specific region in parameter space. Joint profits can be boosted by redesignating the equivalent total investment between the two companies. As a result, the joint-profit maximizing solution for a research cartel is to decide on asymmetric investments at the R&D level, producing greater concentration at the production level.
