Optimal patent breadth and length with costly imitation
Article Abstract:
Patent breadth is characterized by employing the number of possible entrants which enter an industry. It was observed that optimal patent design may be broad and short-lived or narrow and infinitely lived depending on the market structure and the characteristics of the demand function. With costly imitation and endogenous entry, it was found that optimal patent design may be either broad, narrow or of intermediate breadth depending on the characteristics of the aggregate imitation cost function.
