Optimising electricity efficiency
Article Abstract:
Eastern Electricity has produced a building specification that incorporates high levels of energy efficient design. The specification, entitled Energy Efficient Design (EED), applies to materials, insulation, heating and ventialtion and can be used in deep plan and narrow-space buildings. A thermal response factor of five or over is required from the design and heat loss through the fabric should be below 20w per sq meter. Heated only buildings require local temperature control supported by a weather sensitive central control. EED buildings have lower running costs and are attractive to tenants.

Energy efficiency in public houses
Article Abstract:
Energy conservation measures should be installed as part of the refurbishment of public houses. Greater energy efficiency can be obtained by relatively cheap and easily installed methods and will pay for itself within two years. Measures include; insulation, improving services and modifying equipment, better maintenance of equipment, training staff in efficient operating methods, monitoring energy use and buying more efficient equipment. The benefits of energy conservation include; customer comfort, lower costs and improved profits.

Energy efficiency in advance factory units
Article Abstract:
The printing plant of Reed Southern Print Ltd. in Colchester, England is housed in a conventional factory unit. However, high levels of insulation and the positive attitude of the occupier have achieved good energy efficiency ratings. The production area and offices use 204kW per sq meter in total. Localised water heating and the heating systems in the production area are good. The office area suffers from overheating due to lack of natural ventilation.
