Out with the old
Article Abstract:
Popular sentiment against traditional politicians helped in the success of new candidates like Fidel Ramos and Miriam Defensor Santiago in the Philippine elections. This sentiment proved to be a stronger factor in getting votes than party machines and money especially in the presidential, vice-presidential and senatorial races where Ramon Mitra's party faltered despite gaining most congressional and local seats. Other factors in the garnering of votes were the popularity of candidates and the region from which they came.

Heavyweight contest
Article Abstract:
The presidential elections in the Philippines, to be held on May 11, 1992, marks a landmark in the history of the Asian country. For the first time, its incumbent president, Corazon Aquino, is not seeking reelection unlike her predecessors. Moreover, the US, which has always been perceived to be supportive of particular candidates, now seems to show little interest in the election poll results. The ideological stands of the presidential candidates, which include VP Salvador Laurel and Imelda Marcos, are presented.

Populist pulpit
Article Abstract:
Philippine presidential candidate Miriam Defensor Santiago has been calling on the youth to support her campaign of civil disobedience in protest against wholesale election fraud. Election returns show that she was overtaken by Fidel Ramos after leading the race for the first four days of counting and during the pre-election polls despite having little funds and no party machine. Santiago calls herself a centrist and has plans to implement a new style of government if she becomes president.
