Power of the purse
Article Abstract:
Philippine businessman Eduardo Cojuangco came back from exile and ran for president. Cojuangco's campaign strategy capitalized on the strength and influence of provincial power networks. In Philippine politics, gaining the support of these local power chains is believed to be crucial in determining how a candidate will fare in the polls. Cojuangco has been busy cementing his political ties with grassroots leaders since 1990. His attempt at the presidency is perceived by some businessmen as a strategy to recapture the businessman's former hold on business conglomerates in the country.

No good losers
Article Abstract:
Miriam Defensor Santiago and Danding Cojuangco have raised accusations of cheating and fraud as the latest count in the Philippine presidential election shows a close race between them and current leader Fidel Ramos. The military has prepared for any possible violent protest caused by either candidate, especially Cojuangco who has the resources and the willingness to use them. Such an event would mar the most orderly election in the history of the country.
