Outlook: market performance
Article Abstract:
Europe's consumer catering markets in five key countries are projected to record modest rates of real value growth in the 1997 to 2002 forecast period due to the competitive nature of the business. The expected increases range from under 3% in Spain to 7.9% over the five-year period in UK, which is projected to have the strongest growth among the five major markets. Eating out trends is anticipated to be bolstered by greater economic prosperity and more hectic lifestyles. Germany is forecasted to be the only country to record a decrease in real value, primarily caused by continued economic uncertainty and pressure on spending levels.

The Italian market for tobacco: outlook: sectoral analysis: value trends
Article Abstract:
Cigarettes will maintain its dominance of Italy's tobacco market, accounting for 98.8% of total sales until 2002. In contrast, the cigar sector is expected to continue losing market share, ending up with only 0.5% of total sales by 2002. Smoking tobacco, meanwhile, will gain market share - a projected 0.7% of value sales by 2002 - because of the increasing prices of cigarettes. Within the cigarette sector, extra light tobacco products are expected to come more into favor due to increased health concerns and an EU Directive barring the sale of cigarettes containing more than 12 mg of tar.
