Outlook: trends to watch
Article Abstract:
Demand for anti-ageing/anti-wrinkle products will be maintained for ageing populations wanting to stay "youthful." Increased usage of skin care will be fueled by changing employment patterns and the increasing number of women entering the work force. Meanwhile, increased segmentation of the skin care market is expected, with premium niche sectors fuelling value growth and new product innovation. Innovations will target specific groups such as the young and over-50s and specific users needs such as products which are hypo-allergenic. The blurring of the distinction between premium and mass market sectors is also expected to continue. The facial sector is expected to continue to dominate but will lose share to the more dynamic sector.

Distribution: retail
Article Abstract:
The skin care market has been largely affected by the shift from selective channel and pharmacies distribution to mass market outlets. However, pharmacies and drug stores still continue to account for the largest share of skin care sales in the UK and Germany. In Spain, the grocery stores account for more than half of volume sales of skin care. The availability of sophisticated skin care products in the mass market is increasing the share of the grocery sector. Meanwhile, the offer of sophisticated products at the upper end of the mass market is reducing the distinction between premium and mass products.
