Outlook: trends to watch
Article Abstract:
A demand for high-quality quick service foods at value-for-money prices is expected to emerge as faster-paced lifestyle and socioeconomic changes occur as predicted in the 1997 to 2002 forecast period. Europe's consumer catering industry's crucial demographic trends include the increasing number of children and the continued ageing of the population. The continent's five key markets are faced with a desire for value-for-money that would lead to operators facing likely problems of maintaining low costs and prices. Consolidation is forecasted to spread to all markets with large chains gaining at the expense of small, independent, family-run operations.

European markets travel & tourism: outlook: trends to watch
Article Abstract:
The tourism industry in Europe's major markets can only grow with the recovery of economies and an increase in consumer confidence. Deregulation of air travel and globalization of routes will make long-haul travel more popular as consumers will be faced with increased availability of services at lower prices. Consolidation will characterize tourism markets as mergers and acquisitions, strategic alliances and partnerships become increasingly global. Meanwhile, emergence of new technology will force travel agents to abandon "broker-styled" business model in favor of a more value-added consumer approach.

European markets: small electrical appliances: distribution: retail
Article Abstract:
Independent retailers in Europe continue to lose its share of the small electrical appliance market to specialist multiples, which are identified as mass merchandisers situated in out-of-town retail parks. The continuing trend is reflective of the independents' helplessness in competing on the basis of range and price, as well as the inclination towards out-of-town shopping. Steep competition on prices as well as higher demand for quality-for-money products have been guaranteed by the growth of large-scale retailing in Italy, Spain and other markets.
