The French market for tobacco: distribution: leading wholesalers
Article Abstract:
Seita handles 99% of tobacco distribution in France, operating 11 regional depots and 30 restocking centers for the operation. Seita, the sole French cigarette manufacturer, also imports from key tobacco companies such as Philip Morris, RJ Reynolds, BAT, Rothams and others. Seita secures orders from and delivers to most of the top retail tobacconists in France on a fortnightly basis. The remaining clients receive deliveries once every 28 days, while some get their deliveries 5-6 days of a mail-order dispatch. Seita's monopoly of tobacco wholesaling is overwhelmingly supported by its customers, including major tobacco manufacturers which benefit from Seita's efficient network and tax incentives.

The French market for tobacco: company profiles: Rothmans International
Article Abstract:
Rothmans International sells nearly 80 varieties of cigarette under 26 brand names in France. Among its top brands are Dunhill International, Peter Stuyvesant, Rothmans and the newly launched Winfield brands. Winfield, introduced in the French market in October 1996, has gained strong market reception as it is priced 2 French francs cheaper than Gauloises Blondes, and FF4.60 lower than Marlboro. It commanded an 8% share of the regular-strength cigarette sector by May 1997. The company's premium price positioning entails strong expenditures to sustain its brands' luxury image and exclusivity.
