Article Abstract:
Hong Kong-based business tycoon Robert Kuok is beginning to hand over control of the Kuok Group to younger members of his family. Kuok's sons and nephews will have responsibility for preserving a conglomerate empire with interests ranging from edible oils to luxury hotels. Its turnover was $5 billion in 1997, which was a fourfold increase on 1989 figures. The transition to a new generation of managers is always a difficult time in Chinese family businesses, but Kuok investors are particularly uneasy as the transition coincides with a general change in Asian business culture.

Authoritarian streak
Article Abstract:
Chinese leader Jiang Zemin has been aware of the power of the media to shape public opinion either for or against the government for some years. This was demonstrated when, as mayor of Shanghai, China, he intervened personally to ensure that a burst water pipe was mended. A local reporter criticized him for becoming involved in a trivial matter that should have been left to the relevant officials. Jiang was extremely angry, and made this clear to a special meeting of all Communist Party and government officials in the city involved in propaganda.

Hard to resist
Article Abstract:
Chinese Communist government officials will probably interfere with the day-to-day running of Hong Kong after it is handed to China in 1997, say critics. Many doubt post-transition chief executive Tung Chee-hwa's words when he says that Hong Kong will be run as a separate unit from the rest of China. Low-ranking Communist officials are not expected to be able to resist implementing Communist policies there.
