Utek offering may boost Taiwan's hopes
Article Abstract:
Utek Semiconductor Corp.'s move to raise NT$6.3 billion (US$191.6 million) in a domestic stock sale is expected to have a wider impact. Analysts, including Matt Cleary of ABN Amro Asia Investment Consultancy (Taiwan), predict that if successful, it could restore investor confidence to companies in the country. In addition to benefitting the company, it could also impart to investors that Taiwan is a great market for financing semiconductor companies. Utek spokesman Yang Dyying said the company is expected to proceed with its stock sale once it receives approval for the offering.

Outlook for Taiwan chip makers brightens after quake
Article Abstract:
Stocks from Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturers are among the region's best deals, according to industry analysts. These firms, which were among the victims of the Sep 21, 1999, earthquake, have already managed to get their production to between 70% to 80% of their former capacities by mid-Oct 1999. The low prices for these semiconductor makers, who are expected to show no visible impact of the earthquake on earnings by the end of 1999, are receiving buy recommendations from the region's analysts.
