Good news amid the gloom: telecom companies tap a thriving market
Article Abstract:
Telecommunications companies are seen to benefit from the healthy business of digital networks and remote access servers in Asia, despite the ongoing financial tumult in the region. IDC Asia/Pacific Ltd., a market research company, said that remote access servers sales improved by 81% in 1997. China is considered to be the most important market for the market as telephone networking equipment are installed into rural areas, formerly without telephony. Remote access also received good demand in Taiwan and even in Indonesia, where the Asian crisis took a heavy toll.

Weak results pressure H-P
Article Abstract:
Hewlett-Packard (H-P), the California-based electronics giant, may join ranks of high-tech multinationals trimming staff in Asia in light of slim growth in quarterly revenue. Asia, hampered by economic turmoil, accounts for roughly 15% of the company's revenues. H-P saw its sales in the region dropped by 13% and orders by 19%. With over 25,000 Asian employees in 74 sales offices and 18 factories, H-P will evaluate what steps it will undertake, including "downsizing" operations particularly in Southeast Asia.
