Ozone savers
Article Abstract:
The UK chemical manufacturer ICI will begin production by late 1990 of a chemical hydrofluorocarbon product for refrigeration as a replacement for chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). ICI's 200 million pounds sterling program is several months ahead of its chief international competitor, DuPont, in the race to find environmentally-friendly substitutes for CFCs, which are known to damage the ozone layer. CFCs are being phased out by government regulations, and DuPont is working on a variety of alternatives for CFCs while ICI is concentrating on developing CFC substitutes one product at a time. ICI plans to produce its product internationally by manufacturing hydrofluorocarbons in Europe, the US, and Japan.

The last frontier
Article Abstract:
Rationalization, acquisitions and foreign ownerships are becoming more popular among Europe's defense contractors as companies and their governments attempt to control tight budgets and high research and development costs. Other factors influencing mergers include: increasing pressure from the United States for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to finance Europe's defense; increasing cooperation and information exchange among European governments; and decreasing tension between the Soviet Union, and the United States and Europe.
