Death in Monte Carlo
Article Abstract:
Banker, Edmond Safra, has died in Monte Carlo, and his death raises questions about the future of his banking empire. He set up Republic National Bank of New York, which had developed strengths in the gold trading market by 1980. He decided to sell this bank to HSBC in May 1999. His brothers also ran banks and had some hopes that they could succeed him, though Safra saw HSBC chairman, John Bond, as his successor. There have been rumors as to who caused Safra's death, which dollowed reports of a break-in.
